What is a memory clinic?

A memory clinic is for individuals experiencing difficulties with memory or cognition, such as concentration, problem solving, behavioural changes or the ability to function normally in their daily lives. The aim of a memory clinic is to assess an individual’s memory and cognition and to understand what may be causing the difficulties. When applicable a diagnosis is given, and a comprehensive treatment plan is developed.

We believe in developing highly individualised treatment plans to assist with the cognitive difficulties or compensate for diminishing cognitive functions to maximise the individual’s quality of life. As a part of the treatment plan, caregivers are provided with psychoeducation and therapeutic support if needed.

We believe in taking a holistic approach, and understanding the individuals social and psychological circumstances as well as their medical needs or conditions. Memory and cognitive difficulties can create stress and burden on loved ones, and we provide a comprehensive assessment not only of the individual with cognitive difficulties but the needs of their caregivers and loved ones.

When should I bring my loved one to a memory clinic?

If you are concerned that your loved one, or someone in your care is experiencing behavioural changes (such as becoming withdrawn or agitated), memory problems ( such as forgetfulness, repeating the same questions) or you have safety concerns (such as leaving taps running or the stove on) you would be eligible to attend a memory clinic.

Memory and cognitive changes can happen for a number of reasons, but early assessment and intervention of possible causes such as dementia are important. With an early diagnosis of conditions such as dementia, treatment and intervention strategies can be put in place to ensure your loved one remains safe and slow the progression of the disease.

How do I access the memory clinic?

If you feel you need to have your loved one assessed at our memory clinic, you will need to have a referral from your GP, NDIS Support Co-ordinator or Psychologist. If you are unable to obtain a referral from a medical professional or allied health member, you can give us a call and we can assess your eligibility.

Important Information when attending our memory clinic:

  • The client or person experiencing memory or cognitive difficulties is over the age of 25 years

  • The client is accompanied by a care giver, loved one or and individual they spend time with daily/weekly

  • Any recent medical reports such as hospital discharge summaries, brain scan reports or other medical investigation reports should be brought to the appointment. If this information is not available, a consent form to access this information will be provided.

  • A list of medications the client is currently taking

What happens on the day of my appointment?

On the day of the appointment, both the client and the caregiver will be working with a neuropsychologist. An extensive clinical interview will be taken which will inform the cognitive assessment. We use both a psychometric and qualitative approach, rather than full assessment batteries. This ensures the assessment is targeted and individualised to the needs to the client. When the assessment of the client commences, a further caregiver burden and stress interview will commence. This gives caregivers a further opportunity to discuss their concerns and needs so that supports can be put in place.

The appointment time allows for frequent breaks if needed, in a quiet and inviting space. Once the assessments are complete, initial feedback will be given and a follow up appointment time will be allocated.

The follow up appointment will allow for extensive feedback and treatment plan discussion.
